NOTHING PERSONAL
Some firehouse traditions should not be messed with, right? But this whimsical take on our traditional carnivores-only-kitchen-club poses an interesting question about what tradition really means in the fire service, and when it’s appropriate and advantageous to change it. Change never comes easy, even when it’s in our best interest to blaze a new direction. I’m a firm believer in balance, and like the old Japanese proverb teaches, we should have one eye on the past, one on the future, while our feet are firmly planted in the present.
So, as a topic for discussion, what traditions are good or bad, and if bad, how do we change them?

USO TOUR – DJIBOUTI/BAHRAIN
I’m finally back in the studio this morning after spending all of last week on a USO tour. This most recent venture took our merry band of super-creative knuckleheads to Djibouti and Bahrain where we drew for soldiers, airmen, and sailors on multiple bases. As with all the previous tours, it is such an honor to be chosen among the The National Cartoonists Society’s members to represent the organization, as well as the USO, to share our gifts and hopefully bring a smile to our warriors serving abroad. I always return home exhausted from the seemingly endless travel, yet encouraged and humbled by the spirit of our men and women serving in countries that most would never consider an exotic location. Thank you for what you do!
To my brothers in ink, I want to express my admiration for your dedication, and am more than a little envious of your talents. It is, as always, an honor, gents!
GIVING THE FINGER
Well, that’ll clear it up! The foam finger also comes in DayGlo yellow and orange so not to clash with the Command Vest. Hey, I’m all for fashion management (I may have just found another cartoon topic).
