Are we losing sight of civility in the fire service – especially on social media forums? Is it already lost? Constructive debate and dialogue is taking a back seat to the discourse of demeaning comments and anger over any differing opinions or tactics. Ideology has replaced thoughtful discussion between people of contrasting backgrounds, response realities, and socioeconomic constraints. With a couple quick clicks on a keyboard or phone screen, you can share your opinion with complete anonymity, or at the very least, soulless detachment for how your comments will be perceived beyond your personal bubble. Social media can be a constructive, supportive, and positive resource if done in the essence of consideration and respect to others. Pollyannish assumption? Perhaps. But this cartoonist still has hope!
